Back to Questions My toilet flushes in the middle of the night by itself, what causes that?

Like reasons for a toilet running continuously, this symptom indicates that water is leaking from the flapper, tank ball or similar device (located in the center of the tank) causing the tank fill valve (commonly called a ball cock) to continue to fill the tank.

The reason that you might think that it is flushing is that the fill valve installed in the toilet requires that the water level drop a significant amount before coming on to refill the tank.  Check the flapper, tank ball or seal on the flush.

One way to check for this is to put some food coloring in the tank and check to see if the color shows up in the bowl.

The usual remedy is to replace the flapper, tank ball or seal that keeps the water in the tank.
