Back to Questions I don’t have any hot water.  What do I do now?

The first thing to do, if it is an electric water heater is to check the water heater circuit breaker in the electric panel.  If that is not tripped, the next step is to check the reset on the water heater.  This is almost always located behind the top inspection cover on the side of the water heater.

If the reset button does not click, the next most common cause, in an electric water heater, is the upper element.  In general if the upper element doesn’t work you will not have any hot water.

If the water heater is gas, check the pilot to see if it is burning.  If it isn’t, try re-lighting it by the instructions on the side of the tank.  If it won’t stay lit, you may need to replace the thermocouple, which may or may not be a do-it-yourself project, depending on your experience level.
